30年来の友人が先週亡くなりました。
彼との出会いは展示会で弊社がとっても小さなオーダーをしたところから始まります。
その頃は絵本の挿絵の商品以外は、クラシックな柄のイギリス商品しか輸入したことがなく、彼の作っている可愛くて、愛らしくて楽しいデザインは初めての柄。
売れるかどうか自信がなかったのでノートを６柄ほど少しずつと、カードも少しずつ注文したのを覚えています。
そんな小さいオーダーにもかかわらず、厚かましく、日本独占販売させてもらえるか聞いてみたら、二つ返事。私のオーダーを取ってくれたマイケルがいいよ、と言ってくれました。
後ろでデービットも頷いていました。
Our 30years friend has gone last week.
Our relationship start when we ordered to him, ordered very tiny order.
We were importing classic designs products, and picture book illustration desisns products.
So it is first time to order his cute, lovely and happy designs.
I did not know we can sell for our customers, so we ordered 6 desings for note books and small quantity for greeting card.
And we asked to have exclusive for Japanese market eventhough we ordered so tiny order.
But Michael agreed to give us exclusive for Japanese market!! David agreed too!!!
その商品がどんどん売れ出して、カードもたくさん発注できるようになり、また、彼の会社は二つ目の会社、Soul社を作り、文具やバッグ、カード、ラッピングペーパーを作り、弊社も色々輸入してました。
２００４年からは弊社のオリジナルのミニカードを作ってもらいました。
デザイナーさんに希望の絵柄を指定して、描いてもらい、日本で売れるデザインに修正してもらい、
最後は４３種類までに達しました。
プルーフと一緒にデービットのメッセージ。気に入ってくれるといいな、すぐ会いましょう。と。
After that his products sell well and we could order a lot of quantity.
He started another company, Soul.
Soul produce stationery bags, greetingcards and wrapping papers.
We orderd them .
From 2004, we ordered our special designs for mini cards
He sent proof with his message , We hope you like them. See you soon.
We orderd our designs and designer had draw for us.
We changed some details for Japanese market.
At last designs are 43 designs!!!
ペンケースも作ってもらいました。
その頃お取引しているお店様が、PVCの商品の扱いをやめる、とのことだったので、コットンで作ってもらうことにしました。
２種類作り、完売しています。
We ordered special pencil cases too.
At that time our customer has stopped to sell PVC products, so we ordered with cotton fabric.
We ordered 2 designs, all products has sold out.
その頃、とってもデリケートな要望をするので、いささか戸惑っていたようでしたが、我慢強く付き合ってくれました。
だからこそ、４３種類ものカードを作り、ペンケースも２種類作れたのだと思います。
彼が日本へ遊びに来た時に、連れて行った得意先で、彼はびっくりしたのです。
日本のお店は、商品の陳列がとっても整理整頓され、美しく、また、商品も一つ一つ傷がつかないよう、管理されていて、この時にやっと私たちの要望がデリケートなのか理解できた、と言っておりました。
その後、何年かして、お取引はなくなり、彼は２０２０年に会社をクローズしました。

We always ask him very very small details changes. Some times, it was difficult for him to understand our request, but he tried to solve the problem with patience.
So we could make 43 special design greeting cards and we made 2 special pencil cases.
When he came to Japan, we brought him to our customers. And he surprised.
In Japan, dispray are beautiful and every products are sold very carefully.
After that he could understand why our request is so delicate for production.
Some days after we have no relationship for business.
He closed his company on 2020.

いつからか、展示会の時は、いつも私の誕生日が重なるので、ランチを共にして、祝ってくれました。
仕事での繋がりがなくてもランチ会は続いておりました。
いつも遅くまで残業している私を心配してくれていて、残業用にと、必ずチョコレートもいただいてました。
Every year, at the show, My birthday is same date at the show , so he celebrate my birthday with lunch.
We have no relationship with business but we always have lunch together.
He always worry for me, because I work so hard in Japan.
For late night work, he always prepares chocolate for me.
５０歳の誕生日には、特別にリバテイーの大判のシルクのスカーフをプレゼントしてくれました。

On my 50th Birthday, The scarf on my neck is Birthday present from David.
It was big silk Liberty scarf!!! It is very beautiful.
私たちも彼に薄地のグラスや、のれんなど、おしゃれな彼に気に入ってもらえるものを選んでプレゼントしてました。
抹茶も大好きでしたので、友人の谷村丹後氏の作る茶筅をプレゼントし、そこで振る舞いました。日本に来た時は毎日抹茶アイスを食べていたそうです。
We brought thin glasseses and Japanese curtains for him.
It was very hard to find for him, because he has very nice sence.
He loved matcha.I gave him Chasen for Matcha and I did Matcha tea ceremony.
He loved it! Chasen was made by my friend, Maestro,Tango Tanimura.
He had Matcha gelato everyday when he was in Japan .
彼のバースのお家を訪ねた時、ハーブティーをご馳走になり、庭に植えている何種類もあるハーブから選んで摘んで来てくれ、いただいたのを覚えています。
日本へ来た時は小田原の得意先、東京の得意先へ行き、東京でお寿司を食べ、鎌倉へ連れて来て、大仏をみて、お蕎麦を食べ、私の住んでいるマンションを見せて、バタバタと、でもとても楽しく過ごしました。
イギリスの展示会、ニューヨークの展示会、会える機会があれば一緒にランチをしたりして、いつも近況を話すのがとても楽しみでした。
展示会が終わると息抜きに旅に出ていて、世界各国いろんなところに行ってました。
写真家でもありましたので、彼の旅行の写真を見るのが楽しみで、ブログを送ってもらうのを心待ちにしていました。
会社を辞めた後、日本のこけしのコレクションをInstagramにあげていて、弊社の社長の娘さんと見ながら、Davidはセンスいいよね。今度イギリスに行ったらこけし談義したいな。と言っていたので、この話をメールしようかな、と思っていたのに、連絡しなかったんです。
これはとても後悔しています。
また、イギリスで会えるからその時に話せばいいか、と。
今も、彼の大きな手。力強い握手。３回の頬へのキスの挨拶。低い声。私を時々からかう冗談。優しい目。全てが走馬灯のように思い出されます。日本人に似た繊細な心配りができる心の温かい人でした。
こうして彼の思い出を紐解いていると、次々と思い出されます。
昔から、彼との写真を見ると落ち着くので、部屋に飾っています。
最後に、その写真を載せたいと思います。
When we visited his house in Bath, he served us Herb tea.
Herves were in his gardens.
They were fresh and very nice.
When he was in Japan, we went to our customer in Odawara, Tokyo.
We had Sushi.
And we went to Kamakura, we visited Budda and we had Japanese soba.
I show my apartment and he loved my place which is riverside.
It was very busy but we had very nice time in Japan together.
We had lunch with him at show in England and show in New York.
Every time we meet, we had lunch and we chat how we are doing.
He visited around the world.
After the show he visited a lot of coutry.
I was very much looking for his blog for his travel.
After his retire, he had kokeshi Instagram.
With Ewa, Mr Kawamura’s daughter, we have seen his instagram and we were talking about his great sense.
So she want to talk about Kokeshi with David when she visit England next time.
I did not send e-mail about this.
It is big regret for me.
I thought I can talk next time we meet.
